Introduction to Shimura varieties

Our aim in this course is to learn about Shimura varieties and the Langlands-Kottwitz method. The main topics are:

• The definition of Shimura varieties in terms of hermitian locally symmetric domains
• Their description by PEL moduli problems
• Honda-Tate theory and point counting in characteristic p.

Lecture notes will be provided and updated regularly.

Schedule

We meet in Room 102 on Tuesdays 10:00 -- 11:35 and Thursdays 15:05 -- 15:50.

Exceptions:

No lecture and no Q&A on	25.09., 30.10., 25.11., 27.11.
90 minute Thursday lecture (15:05 -- 16:40)	9.10., 16.10., 23.10., 6.11., 13.11.

Q & A Session

Every week after the Thursday class, I'll be available to discuss questions in algebraic geometry and number theory. These can be questions that came up during the lecture, when reviewing the lecture notes, or can even be unrelated to the course.

The Q & A will start slightly after 15:50 or 16:40 in room 102, depending on the date (please see above).
